Before you begin
Saving a document link does not make its contents ready for offline editing. Prepare the file while connected, then test it in the Docs app you will use. Select the correct document so work is not performed on an outdated copy.
Check the document title and Google account before editing. A shared file may grant viewing, commenting or editing permission, which affects the controls available. For collaborative documents, agree on the intended change and avoid replacing another person's work without context. Review the result in the document itself, since the cursor's editing position does not always show the full page layout.
Follow these steps
Follow this sequence in the Android app.
- Open the Google Docs file list while online. Check the title, account and latest contents of the document you need before travelling or beginning an activity without a reliable connection.
- Open More beside that file and enable Make available offline. Wait for preparation to finish before disconnecting, rather than assuming a visible list entry means the contents are already stored.
- Temporarily disconnect and open the prepared document. Make a small reversible edit to check that both the file and the editing access you need are available on the device.
- Reconnect after testing and inspect the edit. If you want recent documents prepared automatically, review Make recent files available offline in the Docs app's settings and consider local storage needs.
Check the result
Collaborative documents can change while your device is disconnected. After returning online, inspect the section you worked on before assuming every copy agrees. Do not remove the app or its data while important offline edits still need their synchronization checked.
