Before you begin
Captions help when speech is unclear or the surroundings are noisy. First check that the video provides them, then adjust their appearance without covering important visual details. Available caption options differ because not every upload includes the same text or languages.
Check the active account and the open video before changing YouTube settings. Player controls, saved collections and history serve different purposes, so use the menu that matches your goal. For a tutorial, compare the same passage when checking results. Watch on-screen text as well as listening, so a viewing adjustment does not make you miss an important part of the explanation.

Follow these steps
Follow this sequence in the Android app.
- Open the video and tap the player once to reveal its controls. Use CC to enable captions; if the control is absent, that video has no captions available to display.
- Open the player's caption options and select an available language. If the desired language is absent, check Auto-translate when offered, remembering that its output is an automatic translation.
- For default size and styling, open your profile picture, then Settings and Captions. Choose a readable size and style for the phone without obscuring the steps shown in a tutorial.
- Return to the same video and play a passage containing speech. Compare contrast, text size and placement against the picture before deciding that the new settings are comfortable to use.
Check the result
Captions and automatic translation can misinterpret names or technical terms. Compare the text with the demonstration, especially for numbers and app controls. Adjusting caption size does not add captions to a video that does not provide them in the first place.
