Before you begin
A character missing from your keyboard can be entered by drawing it. Handwriting is useful when you recognize a symbol's shape but do not know how to type it. Inspect recognition before translating so an incorrect character does not change the meaning of the sentence.
Check the source and target languages before using a translation. Short text without context can have several meanings, while names, addresses and technical terms may not need translating. Use a complete sentence where possible. Compare numbers and units with the original, and seek clarification when the result will guide an important action or could easily cause a misunderstanding.
Follow these steps
Follow this sequence in the Android app.
- Choose the source and target languages in Translate, then tap the text field. Find Handwrite near the top; a gray button means handwriting is not supported for that selected language.
- Draw a character, word or phrase in the writing area. Make the shape clear and pause briefly so the application can display the closest recognized match for what you entered.
- Inspect the recognized text before continuing. Add spaces where needed, delete incorrect characters or undo the entry if the drawn shape has been interpreted as a different symbol.
- Once the text is correct, select Translate and read the result in context. Use Keyboard to return to typing when the next passage is easier to enter with ordinary letters.
Check the result
A similar appearance does not prove the recognized character is correct. For a place name or address, compare it with the original before showing it to someone. If recognition keeps failing, try a clearer photograph or ask a speaker of that language to check it.
