Check Google Calendar's time zone when travelling

Before you begin

An international schedule can appear to shift when a phone changes time zones. Check whether Calendar follows the device or uses a zone selected manually. Do not immediately edit the event time merely because its local display differs from the original invitation.

Check the account and calendar name before changing a schedule. Personal, family and work calendars can appear together even though their ownership and permissions differ. Compare the date, location and time with the actual invitation or agreement. For shared events, changing the event time and changing a reminder have different effects; settings on your phone do not automatically change every guest's preferences.

Follow these steps

Follow this sequence in the Android app.

1. Open Calendar's menu, then Settings and General. Locate Use device time zone to see whether the calendar follows the zone currently used by your phone's operating system.
2. To have the schedule follow your travel location, enable that option and verify the device's time zone. Calendar will adjust the displayed times when the device zone changes during the trip.
3. To retain a particular zone, disable the device option and select a zone from the list. Choose the appropriate location instead of estimating an hour offset from memory.
4. Open an event with a known schedule and compare it with the invitation. Check the date as well as the time, because conversion can place a meeting on a different day.

Check the result

Events are displayed in each user's local time, including guests elsewhere. Changes to daylight-saving rules can affect older events or those far in the future. For important travel, recheck the schedule closer to departure without creating a second copy of the event.
