Game or app image: Check and rename downloads in Chrome for Android

Before you begin

Downloaded filenames sometimes contain only numbers and become difficult to distinguish from other copies. Inspect the download list before downloading again. It lets you check ongoing transfers and give recognizable completed files a clearer name.

Check the page address before using Chrome's menus, particularly when several tabs have similar titles. Browser controls affect the open page, while buttons within that page may perform actions on the website itself. For a trial, use a page without a pending transaction or unsaved form. Keep track of the starting tab so you can compare results without losing work.

Follow these steps

Follow this sequence in the Android app.

  1. Open Chrome's menu and choose Downloads. With a bottom address bar, open the corresponding controls from that bar. Locate the filename and check whether the transfer is complete or still running.
  2. For an ongoing transfer, use Pause to stop it temporarily or Cancel if the file is no longer needed. Check the selected filename carefully when several downloads look alike.
  3. For a completed file, open More and select Rename. Choose a name that explains its contents or document date, retaining the extension so the file type remains recognizable.
  4. Open the downloaded result to confirm its contents before sharing. If it needs sending, choose Share from the file's menu and verify the recipient in the destination application.

Check the result

The download list identifies files but does not prove their contents are safe or appropriate. Avoid opening files you did not request. Delete a downloaded file only after confirming that any important copy has been stored where you intended.
